The City of Toronto will perform maintenance and improvement activities on Allen Road this weekend from Friday, October 16 at 11 p.m. until Monday, October 19 at 5 a.m. The closure will extend the entire length of the roadway from Sheppard Avenue West to Eglinton Avenue West.
This will be the first time since 2018 that Allen Road, considered one of Toronto’s three expressways, has been closed for maintenance. Commonly referred to as ‘The Allen,’ the roadway runs approximately seven and a half kilometres and provides important north-south access for approximately 80,000 vehicles during weekday peak periods.
City staff estimate that it would take approximately 25 days with lane closures to complete the same amount of highly co-ordinated work performed in just a single weekend.
Traffic-signal timing on nearby routes will be enhanced to help manage congestion associated with the closure.
This full closure of Allen Road for one weekend is an important and safe way that City road crews, engineers and other stakeholders, such as Toronto Hydro and the TTC, can make improvements and keep the expressway in the best state of good-repair.
Some specific activities to be undertaken during the closure are:
• Bridge maintenance, chipping, inspection and cleaning
• Inspection and planning work for future rehabilitation projects
• Guide rail repair and replacement
• Line painting and marking
• Safety barrier repair and replacement
• Inspection and repair of traffic cameras and cabinets
• Pot hole repairs
• Catch basin inspection, flushing and cleaning
• Maintenance and repair of signs
• Debris/litter removal
• Grass cutting
• Tree trimming and inspection
• Lighting inspection and repairs
• Inspection and maintenance work by the TTC, the Ministry of Transportation and Crosslinx on relevant infrastructure along Allen Road
Motorists can use Keele Street, Dufferin Street, Avenue Road and Bathurst Street as alternative routes during the weekend closure.

Gardiner construction affecting downtown intersection and expressway
There will be reduced lanes on the Gardiner Expressway and a partial intersection closure at Lake Shore Boulevard and Lower Sherbourne Street this weekend so crews can safely remove and replace sections of the expressway, as part of work to renew the expressway between Jarvis and Cherry Streets.
From 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, the eastbound Gardiner Expressway from the Yonge Street to Cherry Street will be reduced to one lane.
From 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday, October 17 and from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 18, eastbound and westbound Lake Shore Boulevard will be reduced to two lanes leading up to Lower Sherbourne Street. There will be no left turns permitted in all directions and northbound/southbound access to Lower Sherbourne Street will be restricted.
As well, there will be nightly partial intersection closures at this intersection on October 18, 19, 20 and 22 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. During the night time closures, westbound Lake Shore Boulevard will be reduced to one lane leading up to Lower Sherbourne Street and eastbound Lake Shore Boulevard will be reduced to two lanes leading up to Lower Sherbourne Street. Northbound and southbound access to Lower Sherbourne Street will also be restricted.
This work is part of the City’s comprehensive, co-ordinated strategy to rehabilitate and upgrade Toronto’s roads, transit and underground infrastructure for current and future needs.
ActiveTO closures
Two road closures will also be in place this weekend for ActiveTO to encourage people to get outside and be active while maintaining physical distance:
• Lake Shore Boulevard West from Stadium Road to Windemere Avenue
• Bayview Avenue from Front Street East to Rosedale Valley Road, and River Street from Gerrard Street East to Bayview Avenue
ActiveTO on Lake Shore Boulevard East (Leslie Street to Woodbine Avenue) will not be in place this weekend to provide alternative routes for drivers while restrictions and closures are in place on the Gardiner Expressway.
