Brampton, ON – In a significant cultural moment for Brampton, Canadian entrepreneurs and filmmakers Deep and Minu Basi, along with Director Shadab Khan, announced their documentary film I Am No Queen at a City Council meeting on October 16. The film, which earned a spot at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2024, delves into the challenges faced by young people pursuing higher education abroad, shedding light on the emotional and financial hurdles they encounter.

The documentary aims to capture the personal stories and lived experiences of students who leave their home countries to study in Canada and other nations. It addresses themes such as cultural adaptation, mental health, and the expectations placed on international students by their families. The film’s inclusion in TIFF is a prestigious recognition, elevating the Bas brothers’ work and bringing attention to the pressing issues faced by young people in their quest for education.

Mayor Patrick Brown and members of the City Council expressed pride in the filmmakers’ accomplishment, emphasizing the city’s support for local talent in the arts. “Brampton is committed to supporting storytellers who bring awareness to important societal issues and celebrate the achievements of our community,” said Brown.

Deep and Minu Basi, who have roots in Brampton, noted that the film draws on their own experiences and those of many others in their community. They hope that I Am No Queen will inspire dialogue and prompt action on the challenges faced by international students.

The film’s premiere at TIFF marks a milestone for the Brampton-based filmmakers, setting the stage for further recognition in the Canadian film industry and beyond. The City of Brampton plans to continue its initiatives to support the arts, showcasing stories that reflect the diverse experiences of its residents.
