OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a solemn statement Sunday to mark Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day, honouring the lives lost during the decades-long armed conflict in Sri Lanka and reaffirming Canada’s commitment to justice, truth, and accountability.
“Today marks 16 years since the end of the armed conflict in Sri Lanka – a conflict that spanned over 26 years and killed tens of thousands of civilians,” Carney said.
The Prime Minister paid tribute to the victims, missing persons, and families affected by the violence, while acknowledging the emotional weight the day holds for Canada’s Tamil community.
“We remember the lives lost – the families torn apart, the communities devastated, and those who remain missing to this day,” he stated. “We also think of Canada’s Tamil community, who carry with them the memory of loved ones, and the many remembrance services planned across Canada.”
Carney reiterated Canada’s support for international accountability efforts, echoing the government’s position in backing independent initiatives to uncover the truth and deliver justice for survivors and victims’ families.
“As we mark this solemn anniversary, let it strengthen our resolve to act in tribute, with courage, and for lasting peace.”
Canada is home to one of the largest Tamil diasporas in the world, many of whom arrived fleeing violence and persecution during Sri Lanka’s civil war. Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day is observed annually on May 18, the anniversary of the war’s conclusion in 2009.
