City of Toronto coordinating electrical safety inspection at 280 Wellesley St. E.

The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) has advised Toronto Fire Services (TFS) and Municipal Licensing & Standards (MLS) that they will be conducting a residential high-rise electrical safety inspection at 280 Wellesley St. E. on February 6. This inspection was prompted by recent serious incidents at 650 Parliament St. and 260 Wellesley St. E.

ESA has made TFS aware of potential fire risks arising from the electrical systems in this building and other properties owned by Parwell Investments Inc. and Bleeman Holdings Inc. in St. James Town.

The 280 Wellesley St. E. building will undergo a visual inspection, followed by a physical inspection by ESA. During the physical inspection, power to the building will be completely disconnected. The building will have no electricity, heat, water, or elevator service for a minimum of 12 hours beginning tomorrow at 8 a.m.

During the inspection, the safety of residents and workers is the top priority. TFS inspectors will be on site to ensure the owner implements the alternative measures in the building’s fire safety plan during ESA’s inspection and tests. The building owner advised residents of the upcoming outage on February 4.

Both the ESA and the City of Toronto are committed to safely restoring power to the building as soon as possible. In the event repairs are needed before power can be restored, the ESA will provide direction to the property owner.

A fact sheet is being distributed to residents today to provide residents important information about shutting off all water taps, unplugging appliances and preparing for the power outage (also available on the City’s website at http://ow.ly/b99D30nAHts).

More information will be posted on the City’s website at http://ow.ly/8qd630nAGnt as it becomes available.
