The City of Toronto has chosen the recipients of the 2017 Access, Equity and Human Rights Awards – the City’s highest honour to recognize people or programs that have made a difference in Toronto by working to eliminate discrimination and break down barriers to equality.
The following are the five awards and the recipients for 2017:
• Indigenous/Aboriginal Affairs Award: Percy Lezard
• Access Award: SMILE Canada – Support Services
• Constance E. Hamilton Award: Antree C. Demakos
• Pride Award: BLOOM (LOFT Community Services)
• William P. Hubbard Award for Race Relations: Julian Diego
“Congratulations to this year’s winners of the City’s Access, Equity and Human Rights Awards,” said Mayor John Tory. “Their impressive achievements ranged from addressing conflicts in communities using arts programming to providing transitional gender housing to helping families living with disabilities. This year’s recipients deserve to be celebrated for helping to build a stronger, more equitable society for all Torontonians.”
Award nominations are made by the public and the recipients were selected by a panel of community members with expertise and knowledge of issues pertinent to the categories. This year’s awards will be presented at a ceremony at Toronto City Hall on December 4.
“We applaud these recipients and the important work they have done – and continue to do – to improve life in Toronto for all residents,” said City Manager Peter Wallace.
