The City of Toronto will provide financial support of $200,000 to The Remix Project as it expands its programming for youth facing barriers to success through a new location at Daniels Waterfront-City of the Arts in 2018.
“Support for The Remix Project is a vital element of the City’s Music Strategy through the positive role it plays for youth who are interested in building their careers in creative industries,” said Mayor John Tory. “With new facilities, The Remix Project will be able to expand its programming and have an even greater impact, while acting as the catalyst for a new music hub in a vibrant part of our city.”
The Remix Project provides programming and services for young people from disadvantaged, marginalized and under-served communities who are focused on a career in the creative industries or on furthering their formal education. The City has supported The Remix Project since its inception in 1999, as Inner City Visions, and currently provides organizational and mentorship funding along with the support of the Toronto Arts Council.
“The Remix Project’s ongoing work and upcoming expansion align with the long-term goals of the City’s Toronto Music Strategy to support music education and the development of music hubs in the city,” said Councillor Josh Colle (Ward 15 Eglinton-Lawrence), Chair of the City’s Toronto Music Advisory Council. “I am pleased that the City will support The Remix Project’s move to this new facility as part of the City’s ongoing support of the music sector.”
With a move to the new Daniels Waterfront-City of the Arts community on Queens Quay, The Remix Project will join a mixed-use development with a focus on arts and innovation that will include George Brown College, OCAD University, Artscape and Manifesto, among other organizations. The Daniels Corporation, in partnership with WJ Properties, has designated the fifth floor of the east tower to create an opportunity for not-for-profits arts organizations to have a space to call their own. The total cost for The Remix Project’s new home and operational growth is estimated at $1.47 million.
The City of Toronto funding, through the City’s Economic Development and Culture division, supports the recommendations of the Interim Toronto Action Plan to Confront Anti-Black Racism for increased mentorship and resources for youth arts and culture, as well as the Toronto Music Strategy, created in 2016 by the City’s Toronto Music Advisory Council. The Toronto Music Strategy advocates for the creation of physical music hubs to act as focal points for showcasing Toronto talent, delivering professional development, inspiring Toronto youth and incubating Toronto’s music sector.
Support of The Remix Project also aligns with The Music Strategy’s focus on educational programming that reflects the diversity of Toronto’s music sector, with studies encompassing hip hop, beat-making, remixing and other current genres, including socially conscious music, while also exposing students to non-performing career opportunities in music.
The Remix Project places an emphasis on mentorship leading to employment and frequently brings top artists and industry professionals and alumni from other leading music and lifestyle companies to work with program participants.
