Clear the clutter with City of Toronto Community Environment Days

The 28th annual Community Environment Days begin this Saturday, April 6 and run until the end of September. The events, hosted by the City of Toronto and local Councillors, encourage the safe disposal of waste, promote the reuse of materials through donations and provide residents with an opportunity to learn about waste diversion, water conservation and other environmental initiatives.

Held in each of Toronto’s 25 wards, Community Environment Days allow residents to safely dispose of items that do not belong in the City’s Blue Bin recycling or Green Bin organics waste diversion programs.

These include items such as household hazardous waste, home health-care waste and electronic waste. The events also provide an opportunity to bring specific household items for donation to a local charity. Residents are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items for donation to a food bank. Free bagged compost will be available for pickup at the events, while supplies last (limit of two bags per household).

Community Environment Days are sponsored by Product Care Association of Canada, Orange Drop (Ontario’s Municipal Hazardous and Special Waste program) and Enbridge Inc.

Quote:
“Improper disposal of items such as household hazardous waste, textiles and electronics is a big problem for the City and our environment. Through policies and programs like Community Environment Days, we’re hoping to educate people on reuse, recycling and proper waste disposal. Last year, over 430,000 kg of waste was diverted from landfill thanks to Community Environment Day events, moving us closer to achieving the goals of the City’s Long Term Waste Management Strategy.”
– Mayor John Tory
