In the face of U.S. president-elect Donald Trump’s inflammatory suggestion that Canada should become America’s 51st state, one of our leaders needs to step forward and issue a bold challenge: if Trump believes his rhetoric, dare him to invade.

Yes, you read that right. Dare him.

Canada’s history and resources stand as a testament to our resilience and value on the world stage. From the vast Arctic tundra to the mineral-rich Canadian Shield, we are a country abundant in natural wealth—wealth that others, including our southern neighbors, have long coveted. But let’s remind President-elect Trump of a critical historical lesson: the last time the United States tried to invade Canada, it did not go well.

The War of 1812: A Stark Reminder

During the War of 1812, American forces attempted to annex Canadian territory, believing it would be an easy victory. Instead, they faced fierce resistance from British troops, Indigenous allies, and Canadian militia. The Americans were not only repelled but also saw their own capital, Washington, D.C., burned by British and Canadian forces in retaliation. That defeat should serve as a cautionary tale.

Trump’s bravado might play well on his favored platform, Truth Social, but Canadians know better than to be intimidated by empty threats. Our nation’s sovereignty is not up for negotiation—let alone annexation. Canada has built its identity through grit, determination, and a steadfast commitment to our values. We do not bow to bullies.

Canada’s Strengths

Economically, Canada is no pushover. Our natural resources—from oil and gas to rare earth minerals—are among the most sought-after in the world. With global demand for sustainable energy and green technology soaring, the strategic importance of Canadian resources has never been higher. Invading Canada would be more than an affront to our sovereignty; it would provoke a global backlash, disrupting supply chains and diplomatic relations worldwide.

Militarily, while Canada’s armed forces may be smaller than those of the United States, our alliances and partnerships through NATO and other organizations provide a robust deterrent against any potential aggression. Moreover, Canadians’ fierce sense of independence would transform any invasion into a quagmire of resistance—one that Trump, or any U.S. leader, would regret initiating.

A Call for Leadership

In these tumultuous times, Canadians need a leader willing to take a stand. A leader who will call out Trump’s bluster for what it is: a distraction from domestic challenges and a transparent attempt to rally his base with nationalist rhetoric. Instead of quietly dismissing these comments, our leaders should seize the opportunity to reaffirm Canada’s strength and sovereignty on the world stage.

Let’s remind Trump that Canada is not just a neighbor but an equal partner—one with a proud history, vast resources, and a population that will never acquiesce to threats or annexation. And if he’s still inclined to fantasize about making Canada the 51st state, we’ll gladly remind him of the War of 1812—and dare him to try again.

Unity in the Face of Provocation

Trump’s remarks should galvanize Canadians, regardless of political affiliation, to unite in defense of our nation’s dignity and independence. His rhetoric may provoke anger, but it also provides an opportunity: an opportunity for Canada to reassert itself as a sovereign nation, unwilling to be pushed around by any foreign power, no matter how powerful.

So, Mr. Trump, if you’re serious about your 51st state fantasy, go ahead. Make your move. Canada is ready
