TORONTO — In celebration of Mother’s Day, the Ontario government is inviting residents to enjoy free fishing across the province this weekend, May 10 and 11. The annual initiative waives the need for a fishing licence, giving families an opportunity to spend time together outdoors without cost.
“Fishing is a timeless Ontario tradition that brings people together,” said Mike Harris, Minister of Natural Resources. “Whether you’re an experienced angler or casting a line for the first time, fishing is a great way to connect with loved ones and enjoy everything the great outdoors has to offer.”
Excited to visit the North Bay Fish Culture Station today! With our recent $75 million investment we’re modernizing facilities to boost fish populations and support sustainable fishing. The free fishing weekend is open to all Canadian residents, and while a licence isn’t required, participants must still follow conservation licence limits, size restrictions, and other existing fishing regulations.
Supporting Local Communities
Beyond offering a fun and accessible way to celebrate Mother’s Day, the government notes that recreational fishing plays a major role in Ontario’s rural and tourism economies. Local shops, guides, lodges, and outfitters benefit from increased traffic during such events.
The initiative is part of Ontario’s broader strategy to promote the outdoors, strengthen local economies, and support traditions that encourage residents to engage with the province’s natural resources.
More information on fishing rules, zones, and equipment requirements can be found through the Ontario Fishing Regulations Summary, available on the Ministry of Natural Resources website.
