Graduation ceremony to welcome 51 new Toronto firefighters

Mayor John Tory and Toronto Fire Services Chief Matthew Pegg will welcome the newest group of firefighters at a graduation ceremony tomorrow night. The ceremony recognizes the 51 recruits’ successful completion of comprehensive training for work in the Toronto Fire Operations Division.

The new firefighters are the second graduating class in 2017. This latest class includes 11 female graduates and the graduates have widely varied educational and employment histories. Some of the new firefighters have fluency in various languages besides English, including Albanian, Greek, Mandarin, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Hungarian, Russian, Arabic, Spanish and Kutchi. Toronto Fire Services is committed to building a workforce that is increasingly reflective of the communities it serves.

At the request of the graduating class, family members and other guests have been asked to contribute an unwrapped toy for the Toronto Firefighters Toy Drive. At the conclusion of the graduation ceremony, the new firefighters will present the donated items to the toy drive.
