Health Canada releases final regulations for the production and sale of edible cannabis, cannabis extracts and cannabis for topical use

OTTAWA , June 14, 2019 / CNW / – Protecting the health and safety of Canadians is a key priority for the Government of Canada . That is why the government has put in place a strict legal framework to regulate and restrict access to cannabis to keep it out of reach of young people and to prevent criminals and organized crime from profiting from the sale of illegal cannabis.

The Government of Canada today announced amendments to the Cannabis Regulations that establish rules for the legal production and sale of edible cannabis, cannabis extracts and cannabis for topical use. In keeping with the federal government’s public health approach to the legalization and strict regulation of cannabis, the amended regulations are intended to reduce the health risks of new cannabis products. The amendments also allow for a wide and diversified range of cannabis products, which will supplant the illegal market. These products pose unique risks to health. That’s why we’ve taken the time to put in place appropriate safeguards.

As required by the Cannabis Act , the amended regulations will come into effect on October 17, 2019. However, new cannabis products will not be available for sale immediately after that date, and it will take time before they can be made available. the purchase of its products.

It is expected that a limited selection of products will be phased into physical stores and online stores by mid-December 2019 at the earliest. Federal licensees will be required to provide 60 days notice to Health Canada if they intend to sell new products as they are currently required to do. In addition, as with any new regulatory framework, federally licensed cannabis processors need time to become familiar with the new rules and to produce new products. Distributors and retailers authorized by provincial and territorial governments also need time to buy and receive new products and put them on sale.

  • Amendments to the Cannabis Regulations will be published in the Canada Gazette Part II on June 26, 2019. In the meantime, Canadians may request a copy by writing to cannabis@canada.ca . The regulation will not come into effect until October 17, 2019.
