Immunity Application For Israeli PM

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu

January 3, 2020 | By Hopeton Dennie |

Perspective:

PM Benjamin Netanyahu has made an application some four hours before this application window closes. He wants to be granted immunity from prosecution.

Three Charges

He has been charged for three counts of fraud/corruption. This application for immunity is allowed under Israeli law. So there is nothing illegal about same (this application). The parliament has to approve this application for immunity by 50 percent of those voting before it can be approved. Also no election can be held until his application for immunity from prosecution is dealt with. Their parliament is in recession at this time. It is called the Knesset in Israel. New elections are set to be held in March 2020. This date seems now in doubt due to this immunity from prosecution application by Netanyahu. By law the immunity application has to be dealt with before the general elections can be held. Immunity is not automatic as a member of The Knesset.

Lawyer

Their PM, Benjamin Netanyahu has been unable to put a coalition government together and therefore a new election will have to be held to resolve the political stalemate in Israel. There has been push back from at least two of the parties in the Israeli parliament. Netanyahu is a lawyer by profession and should have known better. This appears to be a pattern of behaviour that has led to three criminal charges laid against him (Netanyahu).

Let the Law Reign

It is not good optics for him to be seen, a lawyer, to be failing to show confidence in the rule of law. The PM says it is all politically motivated. We may never know the truth. In my perspective if you commit the crime, you must be prepared to face the consequences and if found guilty serve the time. None should be seen to be above the law.

Power Corrupts

Netanyahu is the longest serving PM in Israel and it would appear that as a former commando he has served his country well. All citizens in Israel must do compulsory military service. We hope he has not used his vast power in a corrupt way. We all know “power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely”

Commentary

It is our further perspective that PM Netanyahu should exit the scene graciously. From all appearances his alleged conduct, has been a disgrace to his profession. He should face the legal issues upfront. We further say stay out of the public domain until your legal issues are resolved. This is not an assumption of guilt sir. You are in a position of trust and you should (Mr. Netanyahu) face the music by setting a good example to your family and the nation’s youths. The youths and all are looking up to you for sound leadership with integrity. We hope his application for immunity from prosecution fails. You seem not deserving of same.

This is our perspective. What is yours? We hope you opt for the moral high ground. Feel free as the verdict is yours.
