JIAS Toronto – A Century of Supporting Newcomers

With over 100 years of service, Jewish Immigrant Aid Services (JIAS) Toronto continues to support newcomers with inclusive, community-driven programs—bolstered by recent Ontario Trillium Foundation grants and a site visit from Thornhill MPP Laura Smith.

Thornhill, ON — For over 100 years, Jewish Immigrant Aid Services (JIAS) Toronto has played a pivotal role in helping newcomers build a new life in Canada. Founded in 1922 to assist Jewish refugees fleeing persecution, JIAS has since evolved into a diverse, inclusive, and community-driven settlement agency that serves immigrants and refugees from all walks of life across the Greater Toronto Area.

Last week, Thornhill MPP Laura Smith visited JIAS to see firsthand how recent grant funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) has helped the organization modernize its facilities and internal systems. Her visit offered a timely reminder of the vital role JIAS plays in Ontario’s broader settlement and integration network.

“By enhancing these facilities and strengthening its operational capacity, JIAS is better equipped to provide critical services to immigrants across the GTA,” said MPP Smith. “Investments like these foster inclusive communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.”

A Legacy of Welcome

Originally formed to aid Jewish immigrants escaping oppression in Eastern Europe, JIAS’s mission has grown over the decades to meet the needs of a changing Canada. Today, it is the only Jewish social service agency in Canada solely dedicated to providing immigrant settlement services — and one that welcomes all newcomers, regardless of religion, country of origin, or identity.

“OTF has been a valued partner to JIAS for many years,” said Naomi Kramer, Senior Manager,  Development at JIAS Toronto. These grants are strengthening our ability to deliver effective  programs and respond to the complex challenges newcomers face.”

Strengthening Services Through Support

The organization’s 1 Open Door office — a collaborative space shared with partners like JF&CS and JVS — recently underwent renovations funded by a $68,000 Capital Grant from OTF. Improvements to accessibility and layout have made the space more welcoming and efficient for clients and staff.

In addition, a $53,900 Seed Grant is helping JIAS implement a robust project management system, streamlining operations from case handling to crisis response. This has enabled departments to collaborate more effectively, particularly on complex cases involving multiple services.

This grant strengthened our ability to collaborate internally on complex cases, allowing us to  bring together expertise from across departments to support the most demanding and  challenging client cases more effectively” said Olesia, Project Specialist in Crisis and Strategic Initiatives.

A Broader Impact Across Ontario

JIAS works closely with schools, employers, housing providers, and mental health professionals to ensure that newcomers receive holistic support. From language training and employment readiness to housing assistance and cultural orientation, the agency offers wraparound services that empower clients to thrive.

MPP Stephen Lecce, who represents King–Vaughan, emphasized the importance of such services:

“For over a century, JIAS has been there to help new Canadians achieve the Canadian dream,”  said Stephen Lecce, MPP for King—Vaughan. “As the son of immigrants myself, I am proud of  our government’s investment in JIAS so they can continue helping newcomers in King and  Vaughan gain employment, skills, and opportunity in the economy to enable self-reliance and  success.”

Looking Ahead

With over a century of experience, JIAS remains committed to evolving alongside the communities it serves. As migration trends shift and settlement needs grow more complex, the organization continues to be a trusted partner in building a more inclusive Ontario.
