BRAMPTON – The Brampton Honey Badgers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) have secured a major signing, announcing that Koby McEwen, the franchise’s all-time assist leader and 2022 CEBL Champion, will rejoin the team for the 2025 season.

McEwen’s return marks a homecoming for the standout guard, who previously played two seasons with the Honey Badgers in 2022 and 2023 before heading west to join the Vancouver Bandits. During his time in Vancouver, McEwen reached new heights, earning the league’s Canadian Player of the Year honors and averaging a career-best 17.9 points per game. He also excelled from beyond the arc, shooting an impressive 42.3 percent and leading the Bandits to the CEBL Championship game.

“Koby’s decision to return home is a testament to the progress we’re making as an organization,” said Jermaine Anderson, General Manager and Vice President of Basketball Operations for the Honey Badgers. “Not only does he embody everything we stand for, but he also played a pivotal role in leading our team to a championship in 2022 and has earned two prestigious CEBL awards. We’re extremely excited to welcome him back in a Honey Badger uniform this season.”

During his initial tenure with the Honey Badgers, McEwen averaged 13.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game. He played a critical role in the team’s championship run in 2022, earning the CEBL Sixth Man of the Year award in the process. In 2023, McEwen set a career high with 5.4 assists per game but saw the Honey Badgers’ repeat championship hopes dashed by the Scarborough Shooting Stars in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.

“After a lot of consideration, Brampton is ultimately where my heart lies,” McEwen said. “I cannot wait to put the black and gold back on and try to get the team back to Championship weekend.”

McEwen’s career has also included stints in Lithuania, Poland, and with the Raptors 905 of the NBA G League. Most recently, he played five games with Jonava in Lithuania, averaging 15.6 points, highlighted by a 30-point performance with seven three-pointers against Siauliai on October 5.

With 844 career CEBL points, McEwen is on pace to join the exclusive 1,000-point club during the upcoming season. He also has a chance to become the Honey Badgers’ all-time leading scorer, sitting just 131 points behind Zane Waterman’s franchise record of 653.

McEwen is the first player signed by the Honey Badgers during 2025 CEBL Free Agency, which began on February 1.

The team’s 2025 campaign kicks off on May 18 in Montreal, followed by a visit to Ottawa to face the BlackJacks on May 21. Brampton’s first home game at the CAA Centre is set for May 24, where they will host the Scarborough Shooting Stars.
