MISSISSAUGA, ON – Following the recent imposition of a 25% tariff by the United States on Canadian imports, Mayor Carolyn Parrish is voicing her concern about the potential impact on Mississauga businesses and residents. She strongly supports Canada’s reciprocal tariffs and is urging the community to rally together by consciously supporting Canadian-made products and buying local, especially when grocery shopping or making everyday purchases.
“It is disheartening to see a long-standing friendship and partnership between Canada and the United States, one that has been mutually beneficial for decades, strained by recent policy shifts in the U.S.,” said Mayor Parrish. “Canada’s measured response with retaliatory tariffs is necessary to protect our economic interests, and I am confident that Mississauga’s resilient businesses and residents will rise to this challenge.”
The federal government has introduced a 25% tariff on U.S. goods, including vehicles, metals, produce and dairy products. Mayor Parrish emphasized the importance of using this opportunity to strengthen Mississauga’s local economy. She welcomes the Ontario government’s swift decision to ban American companies from provincial contracts, effectively cutting off access to tens of billions of dollars in procurement opportunities with the U.S.
The Mayor emphasized that this challenging period should also serve as a reminder of the strength of Mississauga’s local economy and its global ties.
“As the second-largest economy in Ontario, our community is home to some of Canada’s most innovative businesses and hardworking residents, as well as numerous American businesses that have chosen Mississauga as a base for their operations. We value their contributions and hope they will continue to be part of our city’s success story,” she said. “While we encourage residents to choose locally produced goods to support our domestic economy, we also recognize the importance of fostering strong partnerships with all businesses committed to Mississauga’s growth.”
Mayor Parrish also highlighted the role of energy trade in the Canada-U.S. relationship, noting that Canada remains a vital supplier of energy to the U.S., including oil, natural gas, and clean electricity.
“Our energy exports are a cornerstone of our relationship with the U.S.,” she said. “This interdependence underscores the need for both nations to seek constructive solutions to this dispute, ensuring mutual benefit for our economies.”
The Mayor further called upon residents to join the growing ‘Buy Canadian’ movement to make a tangible impact. “By making conscious choices to support Canadian businesses, especially here in Mississauga, we can turn this challenge into an opportunity for growth. Let’s showcase the quality, innovation, and excellence that Canadian products offer,” she added.
Mayor Parrish also reaffirmed the City’s commitment to supporting local businesses. The Mayor’s office will begin to engage with stakeholders to provide potential resources, advocacy, and assistance to businesses navigating this period of economic uncertainty.
“I want the people of Mississauga to know that we are in this together,” said Mayor Parrish. “We will continue to stand by our businesses and residents to ensure they have the tools and support needed to overcome this situation and emerge even stronger.”
