Ontario Delivering New Postsecondary Campus in Brampton

Province Improving Access to Higher Education and Training for Students in Peel Region.

Ontario will provide students with greater access to high-quality postsecondary education with a new postsecondary site in the growing Region of Peel.

Mitzie Hunter, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Development, and Harinder Malhi, Minister of the Status of Women, announced today a new postsecondary site in Brampton to improve access to postsecondary education in one of the fastest growing communities in Canada.

Focusing on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM), programming will be delivered in partnership by Ryerson University and Sheridan College of Applied Arts and Technology. The new site will provide up to 2,000 new undergraduate spaces within five to 10 years.

Students enrolled at the new site will also have access to experiential learning opportunities — such as co-operative education, internship programs and case studies — to help them develop the skills they need to find and keep good jobs in the province’s changing economy.

Ontario’s plan to support care, create opportunity and make life more affordable during this period of rapid economic change includes a higher minimum wage and better working conditions, free tuition for hundreds of thousands of students, easier access to affordable child care, and free prescription drugs for everyone under 25, and 65 or over, through the biggest expansion of medicare in a generation.

Ontario will invest $90 million for the construction of a new postsecondary site in Brampton and will also support land purchase.
The site for the new campus will be at the south-east corner of Church Street West and Mill Street North in Brampton.
Peel is one of the fastest growing communities in Canada and is located along Ontario’s Innovation SuperCorridor, home to dense pockets of start-ups, research institutions and world-class talent.
Population growth over the next 20 years is expected to be concentrated in and around the City of Toronto, including York, Peel and Halton Regions.
Currently, the combined 18-24 year old population of Halton/Peel is almost 200,000 and is anticipated to grow by almost 20 per cent by 2035.
Ontario has invested $4.1 billion in capital funding for colleges and universities since 2003.
