TORONTO — The Ontario government is taking major steps to make fertility treatments more accessible and affordable for families across the province. On Tuesday, the province launched a new expansion of the Ontario Fertility Program (OFP) and introduced the Ontario Fertility Treatment Tax Credit, a move expected to triple the number of families who can benefit from publicly funded fertility care.
With a $250 million investment over three years, the government is calling on all fertility clinics in Ontario to apply for participation in the expanded program. The goal is to increase the number of IVF treatment sites, reduce waitlists in both hospitals and community clinics, and bring care closer to home.
“This historic announcement will triple the number of families benefitting from government-funded IVF services,” said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “With more clinics participating in the Ontario Fertility Program, more people and families across the province will be able to access services faster, more conveniently and with more financial support.”
As part of the initiative, the new Ontario Fertility Treatment Tax Credit is now in effect — retroactive to January 1, 2025. The refundable credit covers 25% of eligible fertility expenses, including IVF cycles, fertility medications, diagnostic testing, and travel for treatment, up to $5,000 per year.
That means a family spending $20,000 out-of-pocket on fertility services in Ontario could now receive $5,000 in tax support in addition to the existing federal and provincial medical expense tax credits.
Peter Bethlenfalvy, Ontario’s Minister of Finance, emphasized the province’s commitment to families:
“This historic investment will build on our work to provide more people and families with better access to the services they need to start and grow their families — expanding clinic capacity, shortening waitlists and making these services more accessible and affordable for all Ontarians.”
Currently, the OFP supports 50 clinics across Ontario that offer publicly funded intra-uterine insemination (IUI), IVF, and fertility preservation services. Since the program launched, over 119,500 Ontarians have received support to start or grow their families.
The province-wide call for applications is now open until 5:00 p.m. EST on July 24, 2025, allowing existing and new clinics to apply for funding. Successful applicants will be announced later this year.
The expanded fertility strategy is part of Ontario’s broader health care plan, Your Health: A Plan for Connected and Convenient Care, which focuses on improving access, shortening wait times, and delivering care closer to where people live.
