Ontario Government Approves New School for Whitby Students

New Building for St. Marguerite d’Youville Catholic School to Feature Child Care

WHITBY — Ontario has approved a new school building to help create better learning environments for students at St. Marguerite D’Youville Catholic School in Whitby.

Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education, was joined by Lorne Coe, MPP for Whitby, at All Saints Catholic Secondary School today to share how the new school will support families in the growing community. The new facilities will also include a child care room and an EarlyON Child and Family Centre room to provide more families with high-quality child care.

The new school facilities will replace the existing school on Michael Boulevard and include space for more than 320 students from Kindergarten to Grade 8.

“We are investing in building new schools and renewing existing schools across Durham Region so that our students have safe and positive education environments to learn and thrive,” said Minister Lecce. “I am proud to deliver on this critical project – from a new school to new child care spaces – following MPP Coe’s strong advocacy for his constituents and for our young people in Whitby.”

“For years, St. Marguerite D’Youville has played an important role in Whitby, and I know that the new school building — with all that it will offer students and families — will continue to help the community grow,” said MPP Coe.

Ontario recently launched the 2019-20 Capital Priorities Program to provide school boards with the opportunity to access funding for large-scale projects in every region of the province. The program will also provide funding for school-based child care spaces as part of the government’s commitment to build up to 10,000 new child care spaces in schools.
