TORONTO — The Ontario government is stepping up to the plate with a $300,000 investment in the Jays Care Foundation to expand baseball programming for children and youth across the province. The funding, delivered through the Inclusive Grassroots Recreation (IGR) program, aims to create more equitable access to sport and recreation — particularly for children facing systemic barriers.
“Our government is breaking down barriers so kids of all backgrounds and abilities can experience the life-changing benefits of sport,” said Neil Lumsden, Minister of Sport. “We’re proud to partner with world-class organizations like Jays Care.”

Supporting Inclusive Baseball Programs
The funding will directly support two of Jays Care’s flagship programs:
-
Challenger Baseball, which provides adaptive baseball opportunities for children and youth living with disabilities.
-
Indigenous Rookie League, which partners with Indigenous communities and schools to build custom baseball programming and inter-community play.
These programs are part of Jays Care’s broader mission to use baseball as a tool for youth development, promoting physical activity, teamwork, and resilience.
“This contribution will have a lasting impact,” said Jules Porter, Director of Programs at Jays Care. “We are fostering a healthier, more connected, and confident future for young people across Ontario.”
Grassroots Recreation with Broad Reach
Since 2021, the Inclusive Grassroots Recreation program has reached over 65,000 children and youth throughout Ontario — including Indigenous youth, 2SLGBTQ+ youth, newcomers, low-income families, racialized children, and youth in Northern Ontario.
This latest funding helps ensure more children have access to safe, inclusive, and high-quality sport programming — a critical need as families face rising costs and shrinking recreation budgets.
“Accessible recreation programs enable young people to grow confidently and reach their full potential,” said Greg Rickford, Minister of Indigenous Affairs.
“We thank Jays Care Foundation for working so hard to provide children and youth with amazing opportunities to play, learn, and grow,” added Michael Parsa, Minister of Children, Community and Social Services.
A Lasting Impact Beyond the Diamond
From teaching essential life skills to promoting mental and physical wellness, Jays Care’s programs are helping Ontario youth thrive through sport. This latest investment reflects the province’s continued commitment to inclusive play, equitable opportunities, and healthier communities for all.
