The work to install a new watermain and complete road repairs on Jarvis Street between Queen Street East and Dundas Street East has been delayed. As a result, the completion of this project has been changed from the end of October to the end of December.

It has taken longer than expected to prepare the new watermain for service, which includes disinfection and water quality testing. During construction, the City also identified an opportunity to fully replace the old water service pipes with new larger pipes to provide improved water service to properties along Jarvis Street.

The work zone on Jarvis Street between Dundas Street East and Queen Street East will continue to maintain at least one lane of northbound and southbound vehicular traffic. Road users are encouraged to use Church or Sherbourne Streets as alternate routes.

Most of the work on this project will take place Monday to Friday, from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., with some work on weekends and overnight as required. There will also be periods of inactivity on the site as crews complete water quality testing. Before a new watermain can be put into service, the City conducts tests to ensure the water flowing through the pipes is safe to drink and meets the Ontario Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks water quality standards.

This project will improve water service in the local area by replacing two vintage watermains, both over 100 years old, with a new larger diameter watermain, installing new water service pipes and repaving Jarvis Street from Queen Street East to Dundas Street East.

Signs will remain posted to support the safe travel of all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.

The City is engaged in an aggressive program, investing $720 million in 2018, to renew aging infrastructure to improve the quality of the watermain and road network. This replacement work is necessary to prevent unplanned water service disruptions, watermain breaks and renew aging roads and sidewalks for current and future needs.
