Henry Street HS and Anderson CVI face-off in week-long sports challenges
In the last week of February (25-28), Henry Street High School and Anderson Collegiate Vocational Institute vied for the Mayor’s Cup in a rivalry that is decades long, but moved to its current “Rivalry Week” format in 2009.
Over three days, Henry Street HS and Anderson CVI students competed in hockey, basketball, and volleyball games.
Grade 10 Anderson CVI student Ali says she loves the excitement of Rivalry Week because, “the school spirit is incredible, it brings everyone together.” Fellow Anderson CVI student Mei adds, “it’s a fun excuse to get a little crazy every year.”
On February 26, Henry Street HS and Anderson CVI invited their own students, parents, and students from their feeder schools to the Tribute Communities Centre in Oshawa for the hockey events.
Henry Street HS feeder schools include: Colonel J.E. Farewell PS, E.A. Fairman PS, Sir William Stephenson PS, West Lynde PS, and Whitby Shores PS. Anderson CVI feeder schools include: Bellwood PS, C.E. Broughton PS, Dr. Robert Thornton PS, and Pringle Creek PS.
Friendly Competition
The Anderson CVI and Henry Street HS girls’ hockey teams faced-off first in an exhibition game, with the Anderson Raiders taking the lead and winning 1-0.
The boys’ hockey teams played each other next, with the Anderson Raiders narrowly securing a 4-3 win in overtime.
In both games, the Anderson Raiders and Henry Street Hawks were neck-and-neck, keeping the wildly cheering fans on the edge of their seats.
Next, the boys’ basketball teams battled it out on the court, with the Anderson Raiders winning 55-48.
Rivalry Week wrapped up with the girls’ volleyball teams providing the crowd with a lively game. Once again, the Anderson Raiders captured the win at 3-0, completing a full Rivalry Week sweep.
In the 10 years since Rivalry Week began, both schools have now won bragging rights five times each, leaving the overall series tied up at 5-5.
Izell, a Grade 8 student from Colonel J.E. Farewell PS in Whitby, says she’s looking forward to experiencing Rivalry Week in high school next year, “if this is how fun high school will be, I can’t wait.” She adds that she may not join any of the sports teams, but she will definitely continue attending the Rivalry Week events as an avid spectator.
