Spring rain and snowmelt mean faster flows on many waterways
TORONTO, May 17, 2019 /CNW/ – Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is reminding the public to stay clear of dams and hydro stations on Victoria Day weekend. Many parts of the province have experienced higher water levels and faster flows because of significant rain and snow melt this spring.
“Water levels on many lakes and rivers are much higher than normal,” said Mike Martelli, President of Renewable Generation for OPG. “Please enjoy this Victoria Day Long Weekend, but remember to stay clear and stay safe around OPG’s dams and generating stations.”
Water levels can change quickly. OPG continuously adjusts the flow of water through its dams to accommodate changing water conditions. These adjustments are coordinated with the relevant river authority.
Safety booms may also be damaged from unprecedented high flows and debris on the Ottawa and Madawaska Rivers. Residents should remain extra vigilant and watch for signage indicating dangers ahead.
OPG operates 66 hydroelectric stations and 241 dams on 24 river systems throughout Ontario.
