Team Ontario Wins Big at the Canada Games

Ontario athletes take home 105 medals

Ontario athletes have done the province proud at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alberta, taking home 105 medals in 19 sports.

Team Ontario’s athletes are returning home with 18 gold, 43 silver and 44 bronze medals. Some of the standout performances included:

1.    Women’s Curling: Team Ontario won the gold medal in this event and Bella Croisier was chosen as the Team Ontario flag bearer for the closing ceremonies. Bella was the skip for her curling team out of Sudbury that won gold with an 8-3 victory over Manitoba.

2.    Wheelchair Basketball: The Team Ontario Wheelchair Basketball Team won a silver medal in week 1 of the Games. Ontario beat the four-time defending champion Quebec team in the semi-final.

3.    Short Track Speed Skating: Claudia Heeney from Waterloo won a gold (Short Track – 3000 m Points Race Female) and a silver (Short Track – 500 m Female) in speed skating. As well, Claudia set a new Canada Winter Games record for fastest female in the 1,000-metre race, with a time of 1:33.481 in the semi-finals.

  • The 27th edition of the Canada Winter Games took place in Red Deer, Alberta, from February 15 through March 3, 2019. Team Ontario’s full roster included 350 athletes, coaches, managers and support staff.
  • The Canada Games are an important component of the sport system and a key event in the development of Ontario’s young athletes. The Games provide athletes with an opportunity to compete in a multi-sport atmosphere and prepare them as the next generation of international competitors. The 2021 Canada Summer Games will be held in Niagara Region.
  • The Games are held every two years, with participation from every province and territory in Canada, and alternate between winter and summer. Approximately 3,600 athletes, coaches and managers participated in the 2019 Canada Winter Games.
  • Team Ontario is supported by the Ontario government through its Games Ontario program, which delivers or supports multi-sport events, including the Ontario Winter and Summer Games for youth, the Ontario 55+ Summer and Winter Games and the Ontario Parasport Games.
