Toronto, ON – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has engaged in high-level discussions with global leaders, addressing trade, security, and economic co-operation amid rising tensions over U.S. tariffs.

On February 1, Trudeau spoke with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum about the strong trade and investment ties between Canada and Mexico. The leaders discussed their shared concerns over recently imposed U.S. tariffs, emphasizing the need to preserve North American competitiveness. Border security and measures to combat illegal drug trafficking were also key topics of discussion. Trudeau and Sheinbaum reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and maintaining open dialogue on common interests.

The following day, Trudeau held talks with António Costa, the newly elected President of the European Council, ahead of an Informal European Union (EU) leaders’ retreat. The conversation centered on the Canada-EU partnership, which is bolstered by deep people-to-people connections and strong economic ties. Trudeau updated Costa on Canada’s response to U.S. tariffs, and both leaders emphasized the importance of ongoing co-operation to ensure security and economic prosperity on both sides of the Atlantic.

Both discussions underscore Canada’s proactive approach to international trade and diplomatic engagement as global economic challenges persist. Trudeau and both leaders agreed to stay in close contact to navigate these issues in the coming months.
