Union Station unveils new lower retail level with expansive food court

The new Union Food Court opened to the public today, marking a significant milestone in the revitalization of Toronto’s busiest transit hub. The Union Food Court is the first area to open as part of the newly constructed lower retail level and offers 10 new food retailers, a seating capacity for more than 600 people and 25,000 square feet (2,325 square metres) of space.

“The Union Food Court is the latest of multiple retail offerings we have brought to Union this year,” said Lawrence Zucker, President and CEO of Osmington, Union Station’s retail developer. “Together with our full-service restaurants, independent retailers and ongoing free programming throughout the station, we invite visitors and residents to come down to experience the new Union.”

Accessible through the GO York Concourse and the York West Teamway, the Union Food Court will also offer live streaming of sporting events, music performances and major events and a Toronto Public Library digital kiosk. It is expected that the new retail offerings will create more than 300 new jobs. A full list of the new retailers is available at https://torontounion.ca/eatshop/.

The City of Toronto is currently leading a multi-year revitalization at Union Station that will promote transit-oriented growth, improve the quality and capacity of pedestrian movement, restore heritage elements and transform Union Station into a major destination. The revitalization is an $800-million City initiative supported by investments of $164 million from the Government of Canada and $172 million from the Government of Ontario.

The excavation, or dig down, was one the most significant stages of the revitalization. It involved digging several metres below Union Station’s existing floor level to create space for two new transit concourses and a new, lower-level retail concourse. The food court is the first part of this level to become available to the public, and work continues to complete the Fresh Market and additional retail areas. More information about the excavation is available on the City’s website at https://bit.ly/2CZFOdK.

Union Station is the busiest transportation hub in the country. The revitalization has moved forward while keeping the station open with trains and subways moving every day.
