Completion of the joint City of Toronto and Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) project to replace TTC streetcar tracks at the intersection of Dundas Street West and Lansdowne Avenue will be partially delayed. The work, which required the full intersection closure scheduled to be completed on October 5, experienced challenges, including a shallow gas main, wet weather and a vehicle-related incident.
As a result, at noon on October 1, Dundas Street West will reopen one lane in each direction for east-west travel, four days ahead of the original schedule. Lansdowne Avenue south of Dundas Street West will reopen at the same time.
However, Lansdowne Avenue north of Dundas Street West to College Street will remain closed until early November, as crews work to encase a shallow gas main that was uncovered during the track replacement work and install the remaining sections of track.
While the closure on Lansdowne north of Dundas Street West remains in effect, road users travelling east-west are encouraged to use Bloor Street West or Queen Street West. Road users travelling north-south should consider using Roncesvalles Avenue or Ossington Avenue.
Signs will be posted to ensure the safe travel of all local road users, pedestrians and cyclists.
The partial opening of the intersection will help to minimize the disruption caused by this work to the local area, ease traffic congestion and restore access to parking and local businesses.
During this time, there will be periods of inactivity on the work site as crews wait for delivery of special order materials and allow areas of concrete to cure.
The City is committed to taking a co-ordinated approach to renewing aging infrastructure to ensure it is in a state of good repair and able to meet the needs of Toronto’s growth now and in the future.
This is the second of three track replacement projects in the Lansdowne Avenue/Dundas Street West/College Street triangle to rehabilitate aging infrastructure.
Once the intersection is partially reopened, the TTC’s 505 Dundas buses will operate both ways through the Dundas Street West and Lansdowne intersection and the 47 Lansdowne and 402 Parkdale Community buses will remain on their current diversion route.
