Welcome to Athlete of the Week, our Friday spotlight celebrating the top performer from a GTA-based team or hometown talent making headlines on the national or international stage. Whether itβs a breakout performance, a clutch playoff moment, or a franchise-shifting milestone, this column honours the athletes who represent the heart, hustle, and pride of the Greater Toronto Area.
This week, the spotlight belongs to one of the biggest names in Canadian baseball β for a contract that made history.
βΎ Guerrero Jr. Makes History in Blue
No headline this week loomed larger than the one coming out of Rogers Centre. Vladimir Guerrero Jr., the face of the Toronto Blue Jays, signed a stunning 14-year, $500 million contract extension, one of the largest in Major League Baseball history.
The deal β second only to Juan Sotoβs $765 million megadeal with the New York Mets β secures Guerreroβs place in Toronto through the 2039 season and firmly cements his legacy as the cornerstone of the franchise.
Since his debut in 2019, Guerrero has evolved from top prospect to All-Star power hitter and clubhouse leader. At just 26, he already boasts:
-
A career .288 batting average
-
Over 160 home runs
-
500+ RBIs
-
Four All-Star appearances
-
A Gold Glove, two Silver Sluggers, and a Home Run Derby crown
His value isnβt just in numbers β itβs in presence, consistency, and his deep connection to the fans and the city.
βI always thought I was going to be a Blue Jay forever. Thatβs what happened today. Thank God we did it. Iβm going to be a Blue Jay forever.β
β Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
With this record-setting deal, the Blue Jays have signaled their long-term vision. For the fans, itβs a message of commitment. For the city, itβs pride. And for Vlad Jr., itβs legacy.
