2022 Hungarian Grand Prix, FP1

F1 Racing car during the 2022 Hungaroring Grand Prix

Good morning to all F1 enthusiasts new and present.  We are here in Hungary for the 13th race of the season at the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix.

It’s a bit of an overcast day with mixed temperature, here in Hungary.  As I said this morning, anything can change here in an instant with the sun peeking out once in a while.  The track temperatures are cool but that could change overnight.

This is the last race before the summer break.

Special notes; Sebastian Vettel has announced this will be his last racing season for F1. What a great driver and human being! Well done and thank you for all the sensational races you have given us!

FP1 Brief (Practice 1)

Thirty minutes into this session, we have Sainz with the fastest time, followed by his teammate Leclerc followed by Red Bulls Verstappen.

Times are starting to drop as the tyre compounds warm up. We are looking at the timesheet and we see that Sainz time of 1:18.750 is the fast-flying lap.

Less than 10 minutes left in the session and we see Sainz, Leclerc, and Verstappen putting on the fastest three laps, followed by the midfield, Norris, McLaren, Russel, and Mercedes to round up the five fastest flying laps so far this session.

This track is tight and curving all the way around with one “Hairpin” in the middle of the track rounding into a long straight, strategic overtaking, with drivers using their elbows to position themselves in front of rivals.

This race will be filled will action-packed racing around this part of the track come Sunday.

Anything can happen on this track.

No incidents to report so far and a lot of data is being generated with all the upgrades that have happened these last few weeks.  Teams are franticly assessing speed, grip and downforce on their carriages for this track.

(Update: The Weather tomorrow is expected to be cold, wet and slippery, like last season’s race. Again, anything can happen here!)

We have the final flying laps coming out for this session …  5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Chequered Flag …

Sainz from Ferrari finishes with the top lap time of 1:18.750.

Verstappen with Red Bull Racing finished with a time of 1:18.800 secs and in 3rd is Leclerc with a time of 1.19.039.

Rounding the top five on the timesheet is Norris for McLaren with a time of  1:19.299 and Russell for Mercedes with a time of 1:19.60.

Quote

“We haven’t changed our plans (for the weather). I think there is much to come. Carlos is comfortable, he did a good lap and I’m sure Charles can as well but as usual, the fight is with the Red Bull”  Mattia Binotto, Ferrari Team Principal
