BRAMPTON — The Brampton Honey Badgers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) have appointed long-time NBA operations executive Al Whitley as the organization’s new chief executive officer. The announcement, released November 12, signals a major strategic move as the franchise works to deepen its community roots and build a championship-contending roster ahead of the 2026 season.
Whitley brings 22 years of experience from within the Dallas Mavericks organization, where he contributed to basketball operations at the highest level and served as a special advisor to former Mavericks majority owner Mark Cuban. His tenure included the Mavericks’ landmark 2011 NBA Championship, an experience he has previously credited with shaping his understanding of organizational culture and sustained success.
He later served as general manager and vice president of basketball operations for the Texas Legends, the Mavericks’ NBA G League affiliate, overseeing player development, scouting, team operations, business partnerships, and community initiatives. Under his leadership, the Legends secured their first playoff win in franchise history.
A Canadian Homecoming
Born in Belleville and raised in Victoria, Whitley developed his passion for basketball alongside childhood friend Steve Nash, later carving out his own path as a player at the University of New Brunswick before entering NBA operations in 2001.
Whitley described joining Brampton’s franchise as a significant personal milestone:
“I am incredibly grateful and excited for this opportunity to help lead the Brampton Honey Badgers back to championship form — both on the court and in the community,” Whitley said in today’s release. “Being born and raised in Canada, this is a full-circle moment for my family and me.”
Honey Badgers owner Leonard Asper called Whitley’s arrival a clear step forward for the organization.
“Al Whitley’s track record and reputation leave me no doubt that he is the right person to fulfill that mission,” Asper said. “We are extremely fortunate that he is making this commitment to Brampton.”
Franchise Priorities: Community, Culture and Competitive Excellence
According to the team’s communications department, Whitley will lead several key initiatives:
-
Expanding the community impact of the Honey Badgers across Brampton and the broader Peel Region
-
Hiring and developing high-character players, staff and leaders
-
Growing the game of basketball locally through grassroots engagement
-
Building a championship-calibre roster and long-term organizational culture
-
Strengthening the Honey Badgers’ role as an entertainment destination for families
Whitley’s leadership experience — spanning NBA championship seasons, player development systems, and G League operations — aligns with the club’s plans to elevate both its on-court competitiveness and community presence.
Looking Ahead to 2026
The Honey Badgers, 2022 CEBL champions, are preparing for an off-season centered on community events, roster development and fan engagement initiatives leading up to the 2026 CEBL season. Information on season ticket packages and public events will be released in the coming weeks.
The team continues to play at the CAA Centre in Brampton and positions itself as a key player in the region’s rapidly expanding basketball ecosystem.
