The Buried Treasure novel blends food culture, music, and crime in a fictional look at the underground trade of rare truffles.

From Michelin kitchens to secretive forest hunts, truffles occupy one of the most lucrative and fiercely protected corners of the global culinary world. That obsession with rare fungi is at the heart of Buried Treasure, a newly released novel by author and musician Nick Greenberg that blends food culture, crime fiction, and creative ambition.

Published by Speaking Volumes and released on January 27, Buried Treasure imagines what happens when an ordinary life collides with an extraordinary — and dangerous — underground economy. Set in Cincinnati, the novel follows Danny Pasko, a struggling Midwestern musician whose fortunes change when his golden retriever uncovers a massive truffle in the woods. What begins as a lucky accident quickly escalates into something far more perilous.

After a local chef eagerly pays cash for the prized find, Danny is introduced to a shadowy gastronomic marketplace where rare ingredients command staggering prices — and where access is tightly controlled. As Danny’s dog continues to uncover truffles, his financial stability improves, and his musical creativity flourishes alongside his newfound income. But success attracts attention, and not all of it is welcome.

The novel introduces centuries-old truffle fraternities — secretive groups determined to protect their dominance in the trade. When Danny’s Ohio harvest begins to draw acclaim, enforcers from this underground world issue an ultimatum: abandon the truffle business or face serious consequences. The story forces its protagonist to confront the cost of ambition and the ethical line between opportunity and exploitation.

Greenberg’s background lends authenticity to the narrative. A professional bassist and composer, he has performed across genres ranging from classical and jazz to Broadway productions, with appearances at venues including Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. Beyond music, Greenberg is also a former chocolatier, a winemaker, and an award-winning home brewer — experiences that inform the novel’s vivid treatment of food culture and craft obsession.

Buried Treasure sits at the intersection of culinary fascination and crime fiction, using the real-world mystique of truffles to explore themes of artistic freedom, greed, and the hidden economies that exist beneath everyday life.
