BURLINGTON, ON | The City of Burlington is proudly celebrating School Crossing Guard Appreciation Week from June 2 to 6, a province-wide initiative that shines a spotlight on the essential role crossing guards play in keeping communities safe.
These often unsung heroes are a vital part of the city’s school day rhythm, stationed at key intersections across Burlington every morning and afternoon — rain, snow, or shine. They help ensure thousands of elementary students arrive at school safely, teaching them safe pedestrian habits while providing a reassuring presence for parents, guardians, and educators alike.
“Let’s give a big shoutout to these everyday heroes in our neighbourhoods who help our young residents get to and from school safely,” the City shared on social media.
Throughout the week, the City is encouraging residents to recognize and celebrate the contributions of crossing guards through personal thanks, school-led acknowledgements, or community shoutouts. Teachers and students are also encouraged to create thank-you cards, banners, or classroom projects to share with their local guard.

A Pillar of Pedestrian Safety
Crossing guards are not just traffic monitors — they are safety educators, community liaisons, and role models. Many have served in their roles for years, forming lasting bonds with the children and families they assist. The role requires specialized training, quick decision-making, and a strong sense of community care.
To better support these efforts, the City of Burlington offers training and resources to all new guards and regularly reviews crossing locations in collaboration with schools and local traffic experts. The City is currently hiring new crossing guards and welcomes applicants who want to make a tangible impact in their neighbourhoods.
“If you’re looking for a rewarding way to contribute to community safety and connect with families in your area, becoming a school crossing guard might be the perfect fit,” said a City spokesperson.
