Iran ceasefire gains support from Canada and European allies
OTTAWA — Canada and several key international allies have welcomed a newly announced two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, urging all parties to move quickly toward a lasting diplomatic resolution.
In a joint statement released Wednesday, Prime Minister Mark Carney joined leaders from Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and the United Kingdom, along with representatives from the European Commission and the European Council, in supporting efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region.
The leaders described the ceasefire as a critical step toward stabilizing a conflict that has raised concerns about civilian safety and global economic impacts.
Diplomatic solution emphasized
The joint statement highlighted the importance of diplomacy as the only viable path forward.
“The goal must now be to negotiate a swift and lasting end to the war within the coming days. This can only be achieved through diplomatic means.”
Leaders also acknowledged the role of international partners, including Pakistan, in facilitating the ceasefire agreement.
Focus on civilian protection and regional stability
The coalition stressed that rapid progress toward a negotiated settlement is essential to safeguard civilians in Iran and reduce the risk of broader regional instability.
They warned that prolonged conflict could have far-reaching consequences, including the potential for a severe global energy crisis.
Call for broader ceasefire implementation
In addition to supporting the agreement between the United States and Iran, the leaders called for the ceasefire to be respected across the region, including in Lebanon.
They emphasized that adherence to the ceasefire will be key to building momentum toward a comprehensive peace agreement.
Safeguarding global trade routes
The statement also underscored the importance of maintaining security in critical international waterways.
Leaders confirmed their commitment to ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor for global energy supply.
Ongoing international coordination
Officials said Canada and its allies remain in close contact with the United States and other international partners as diplomatic efforts continue.
The joint statement reflects a coordinated Western response aimed at preventing further escalation while supporting negotiations for a long-term resolution.
