Ottawa, ON Prime Minister Mark Carney has joined world leaders in issuing a joint statement supporting renewed efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, emphasizing unity and resolve among global partners.

The joint declaration — signed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine, Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada, Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany, President Emmanuel Macron of France, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy, Prime Minister Donald Tusk of Poland, President Ursula von der Leyen of the European Commission, and leaders from across Europe — reaffirms their collective backing for peace and accountability amid Russia’s ongoing aggression.

“We are all united in our desire for a just and lasting peace, deserved by the people of Ukraine,” the statement reads.

The leaders expressed strong support for U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal that fighting cease immediately, using the current line of contact as the basis for negotiations. The joint statement reiterates that international borders must not be changed by force, underscoring a shared commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The declaration also condemns Russia’s continued attacks and its unwillingness to engage in good-faith peace talks, calling on the international community to maintain maximum economic pressure until the Kremlin demonstrates a genuine commitment to end the war.

“We must ramp up the pressure on Russia’s economy and its defence industry, until Putin is ready to make peace,” the leaders affirmed.

As part of coordinated measures, the signatories committed to developing mechanisms to use the full value of Russia’s immobilised sovereign assets to fund Ukraine’s defence, recovery, and reconstruction.

The statement notes that world leaders will convene later this week at the European Council and within the Coalition of the Willing to coordinate further support and outline next steps toward a sustainable ceasefire and long-term peace framework.

With this joint declaration, Canada and its allies signal steadfast unity — backing Ukraine’s right to self-defence, sovereignty, and peace built on justice and accountability.
