Johannesburg, South Africa — Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Germany’s Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz on the margins of the G20 Leaders’ Summit, reinforcing the deep economic, technological, and security partnership between Canada and Germany.

In their bilateral meeting, the two leaders highlighted expanding cooperation across critical minerals, clean energy, aerospace, defence, and artificial intelligence—sectors central to both countries’ long-term competitiveness. The discussion comes one week after Canada and Germany finalized a $1 billion agreement for the purchase of a Canadian Combat Management System, a major milestone in the growing defence and technology relationship.

The Prime Minister and the Chancellor also agreed to deepen collaboration on Sovereign AI, recognizing its strategic importance for economic resilience and national security.

On global security, Prime Minister Carney and Chancellor Merz reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine, stressing that any future settlement must involve Ukraine directly, respect its core interests, and provide meaningful security guarantees. Both leaders committed to working closely with international partners to secure a just and lasting peace.

The situation in the Middle East was also a key focus. The two leaders expressed strong support for the Comprehensive Peace Plan to end the war in Gaza and emphasized the urgent need for unrestricted humanitarian assistance.

The meeting concluded with both leaders agreeing to remain in close contact as Canada and Germany pursue expanded cooperation across trade, technology, and shared global priorities.
