Canada Denmark Arctic Security Talks Focus on NATO and Greenland

Ottawa, Ontario – Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke today with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, reaffirming Canada and Denmark’s shared commitment to sovereignty, Arctic security, and continued support for Ukraine.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the two leaders reiterated their support for the fundamental principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, emphasizing that decisions regarding the future of Greenland rest solely with Greenland and Denmark.

Focus on Arctic Security and Cooperation

During the call, Prime Ministers Carney and Frederiksen discussed strengthening Arctic security in Canada, Denmark, and across the broader region, including through the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Prime Minister Carney outlined Canada’s plans to significantly increase investments in Arctic security, economic development, and critical infrastructure, as part of the federal government’s broader effort to reinforce Canada’s northern presence.

The leaders also explored opportunities to deepen cooperation with regional partners, including the Nordic Baltic Eight, as geopolitical attention on the Arctic continues to grow.

Continued Support for Ukraine

Both prime ministers reaffirmed their enduring support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. They agreed on the importance of achieving a just and lasting peace, underpinned by strong and credible security guarantees, and emphasized the need for sustained international unity on the issue.

Prime Minister Carney and Prime Minister Frederiksen agreed to remain in close contact as work continues on shared priorities related to security, defence, and international cooperation.
