Ottawa, Ontario – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau convened a virtual meeting with Canada’s premiers today to address the United States’ decision to impose new tariffs on Canadian goods. The meeting, which included Minister of Finance and Intergovernmental Affairs Dominic LeBlanc, Canada’s Ambassador to the U.S. Kirsten Hillman, and Canada’s Fentanyl Czar Kevin Brosseau, focused on Canada’s response to what leaders have called unjustified economic measures.
Trudeau and the premiers strongly denounced the U.S. tariffs, emphasizing the deep economic ties between the two nations and the potential damage these measures could inflict. They warned that the tariffs would threaten thousands of well-paying jobs and increase costs for consumers on both sides of the border.
The moment U.S. tariffs came into effect this morning, so did the Canadian response.
Canada will be implementing 25% tariffs against $155 billion of American products.
Starting with $30 billion worth of goods immediately, and the remaining $125 billion in 21 days’ time.

As part of Canada’s response, the federal government is implementing countermeasures, including a 25 per cent tariff on $155 billion worth of U.S. imports. The initial phase, targeting $30 billion worth of goods, is set to take effect immediately. If the U.S. maintains or expands its tariffs, Canada has committed to increasing the scope of its counter tariffs.
Trudeau stressed that Canada’s response aims to mitigate negative economic impacts while standing firm against unfair trade practices. Minister LeBlanc confirmed that the federal government is preparing an initial support package to help Canadian workers, businesses, and families affected by the tariffs. Additionally, the First Ministers discussed ongoing efforts to reduce internal trade barriers and improve labour mobility within Canada.
The meeting concluded with leaders reaffirming their commitment to defending Canada’s economy and sovereignty. They expressed gratitude to Canadians for their resilience and solidarity during this period of economic uncertainty and pledged continued cooperation to navigate the challenges ahead.
