Ottawa, ON – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau convened a virtual meeting with provincial and territorial premiers Wednesday to discuss strengthening the Canada-U.S. border amidst ongoing challenges, including the flow of illicit drugs and illegal migration. The meeting, focused on bolstering the security and efficiency of one of the world’s most well-managed borders, underscored the importance of a unified approach to addressing shared concerns.
The Prime Minister outlined Canada’s next steps to enhance border security and combat the trafficking of illicit substances such as fentanyl, which continues to impact communities across North America. These actions align with significant federal investments already made to disrupt drug flow and maintain the integrity of immigration systems.

Trust in the integrity of the Canada-U.S. border is critical, emphasized the Prime Minister, highlighting the border’s role in facilitating the $3.6 billion in daily trade between the two nations. He stressed that lawful border crossings and smooth bilateral trade are essential to the economic prosperity and security of both countries.
The leaders also discussed ways for federal, provincial, and territorial governments to collaborate on these critical issues. A unified “Team Canada” approach to strengthen the Canada-U.S. relationship was reaffirmed, with an emphasis on shared interests in trade, supply chains, and manufacturing.
Amid concerns over the potential for increased tariffs, the Prime Minister and premiers unanimously agreed that a 25 percent tariff on goods crossing the border would raise costs for families in both countries. They emphasized the importance of fostering trade and manufacturing partnerships rather than creating barriers that would harm workers and communities.
The Prime Minister committed to maintaining regular communication with premiers, pledging to convene future First Ministers’ Meetings to ensure ongoing collaboration.
This meeting comes at a time of heightened focus on border integrity and reflects a broader commitment to promoting Canadian interests while addressing shared challenges with the United States. As Canada continues to strengthen its relationship with its largest trading partner, leaders are determined to advance solutions that safeguard communities and promote economic prosperity on both sides of the border.
