OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney marked Canadian Multiculturalism Day with a statement celebrating Canada’s diverse communities and affirming the government’s commitment to building a more inclusive society.
“Canada was built on the bedrock of three peoples – Indigenous, French, and British,” Carney said. “In the generations since, Canada has embraced these roots and become a bold, ambitious, and innovative country that is bilingual, truly multicultural, and committed to reconciliation.”
Observed annually on June 27, Canadian Multiculturalism Day recognizes the contributions of people of all backgrounds, languages, and faiths across the country. Canada was the first country in the world to adopt multiculturalism as official policy in 1971, and today, over 450 ethnic or cultural origins are represented among Canadians.
Carney noted that multiculturalism is enshrined in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and continues to guide government policy, including initiatives to fight discrimination, promote newcomer integration, and strengthen reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.
“Today, we celebrate our multicultural heritage and affirm our commitment to building an ever more inclusive Canada,” Carney said.
