Ottawa, ON — As Canadians across the country pause to honour the men and women in uniform on Canadian Armed Forces Day, Prime Minister Mark Carney used the occasion to make a pointed statement on the future of Canada’s military.
“For generations, the Canadian Armed Forces have answered the call to serve – upholding our sovereignty with unwavering resolve,” Carney said in his statement. “On Canadian Armed Forces Day, we honour their sacrifice and service to our great nation.”
Canadian Armed Forces members have answered the call to serve our country time and again.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the new government would not only honour that legacy in words, but through action. “In an increasingly dangerous and divided world, the new government will rebuild, rearm, and reinvest in the Canadian Armed Forces,” he said.
Carney outlined a wide-ranging vision that includes rapid procurement of new equipment, securing the Arctic, strengthening Canada’s defence industrial base, expanding international partnerships, and turning the military into a more attractive lifelong career option for Canadians.
In a notable policy benchmark, the Prime Minister confirmed that Canada is now on track to exceed its NATO defence spending target of 2% of GDP by 2030—a long-standing pressure point among international allies.
This year’s Armed Forces Day comes amid mounting global instability and growing domestic deployment needs, including the military’s active role in responding to Western Canada’s 2025 wildfire crisis.
“We are indebted to those who serve,” Carney concluded, “and we affirm our responsibility to serve them in return.”
