OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a statement marking Armenian Genocide Memorial Day, joining Armenian communities in Canada and around the world in honouring the victims of one of the darkest chapters in modern history.

Also known as Medz Yeghern, the day commemorates the lives lost and the suffering endured by Armenians during the genocide, while reinforcing a global commitment to remembrance and prevention.

Honouring victims and survivors

In his statement, Carney emphasized the importance of remembering those who endured persecution, violence, and atrocities during the Armenian Genocide.

Canada officially recognized the Armenian Genocide in 2006, a step the Prime Minister described as an acknowledgment of the historical tragedy and a reaffirmation of the country’s commitment to human rights.

A national moment of reflection

April is recognized in Canada as Genocide Remembrance, Condemnation and Prevention Month, providing an opportunity for Canadians to reflect on the consequences of hatred, discrimination, and indifference.

Carney noted that remembrance plays a critical role in confronting injustice and ensuring that such atrocities are not repeated.

Responsibility to confront hate

The Prime Minister’s message underscored the shared responsibility to stand against hate and intolerance, highlighting the importance of vigilance in protecting communities.

“Through remembrance, we commit to vigilance,” the statement noted, reinforcing the principle that acknowledging the past is essential to safeguarding the future.

Global significance

Armenian Genocide Memorial Day is observed annually on April 24 and is recognized by countries and communities worldwide as a solemn day of remembrance.

The commemoration continues to serve as a reminder of the importance of education, awareness, and collective action in preventing future acts of genocide.
