OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney will travel to Rome, Italy, from May 16 to 19 to attend the inaugural Mass of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, marking the beginning of the new Pope’s pontificate.
The Mass, a longstanding Catholic tradition, will take place on Sunday, May 18, in St. Peter’s Square and is expected to draw world leaders, dignitaries, and thousands of pilgrims.
Carney’s attendance highlights the enduring relationship between Canada and the Holy See, as well as the importance of Pope Leo XIV’s leadership at a time of global challenges.
While in Rome, Carney is also expected to meet with other international leaders to discuss opportunities to deepen trade, commerce, and cultural exchanges between Canada and its partners.
The visit follows Carney’s earlier statement welcoming the election of Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, whom the Prime Minister described as a symbol of “renewal, hope, and unity” for the Catholic Church and the broader international community.
