In an official statement, Carney said:

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I congratulate Chancellor Friedrich Merz on his swearing-in and on the formation of a new government in Germany.”

Carney emphasized Canada’s close partnership with Germany and the opportunity to strengthen economic and diplomatic ties between the two G7 nations.

“Through stronger alliances, shared values, and deepened trade and commercial ties, we will work to build stronger economies to the benefit of Canadians and Germans alike,” Carney noted, adding that he looks forward to speaking with Chancellor Merz directly and working together at the upcoming G7 Summit in Kananaskis.

The Prime Minister also acknowledged outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz, thanking him for his leadership and wishing him well in his future endeavours.
