OTTAWA – Prime Minister Mark Carney and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi reaffirmed the strength of Canada–Egypt ties during a diplomatic call held on Monday. The two leaders discussed shared priorities in trade, culture, and investment, expressing a mutual interest in expanding cooperation across key sectors.

Canada and Egypt have maintained formal diplomatic relations since 1954. Today, Egypt is Canada’s largest bilateral merchandise trading partner in Africa, with trade volumes exceeding $1.8 billion. The two nations also collaborate on academic exchange programs, education partnerships, and peace and security initiatives.

Focus on Gaza and Regional Peace

A central part of the discussion focused on the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Prime Minister Carney reiterated Canada’s position calling for a full ceasefire and stressed the urgent need for life-saving humanitarian aid to reach civilians.

He also reaffirmed Canada’s view that Hamas must release all hostages and be excluded from any future governing role in Gaza. The Prime Minister underscored Canada’s support for a two-state solution — one that ensures lasting peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.

Egypt’s Role as a Regional Stabilizer

President el-Sisi’s leadership in managing regional tensions was acknowledged throughout the call. Egypt has played a key role in facilitating humanitarian access through the Rafah crossing and has participated in multiple ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas.

Both leaders recognized Egypt’s strategic importance in efforts to de-escalate the conflict and agreed to continue working together in support of peace and humanitarian relief.

Focus on Trade and Bilateral Ties

The leaders underscored the longstanding economic and cultural ties between Canada and Egypt. They emphasized opportunities to deepen trade, commerce, and investment — a signal of continued commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.
