Carney Eid al-Adha Message Highlights Compassion and Service
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a statement Wednesday marking the beginning of Eid al-Adha, one of the most significant holidays in Islam celebrated by Muslims across Canada and around the world.
In his message, the Prime Minister recognized Eid al-Adha as a sacred occasion that coincides with the conclusion of the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.
“Eid al-Adha is a celebration of compassion, generosity, and service,” Carney said in the statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office.
The Prime Minister added that these values are “fundamental to Canada” and highlighted the contributions of Canadian Muslims to communities across the country.
Eid al-Adha Celebrated Across Canada
Also known as the “Feast of Sacrifice,” Eid al-Adha commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son in obedience to God, according to Islamic tradition.
The holiday is marked by communal prayers, charitable giving, family gatherings, and meals shared with relatives, neighbours, and those in need.
Canada is home to a large and diverse Muslim population, with major Eid celebrations taking place in cities including Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver.
The Prime Minister concluded his statement by extending greetings to Muslims observing the holiday.
“I wish a blessed and happy Eid al-Adha to all those celebrating. Eid Mubarak,” Carney said.
The statement was released by the Prime Minister’s Office on May 27.
