Prime Minister Carney Meets Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness to Strengthen Ties

Talks focused on Canada–CARICOM partnership, trade, and Haiti’s security crisis

New York City — Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness, who also serves as Chair of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The two leaders discussed ways to strengthen ties between Canada and Jamaica, with a focus on expanding co-operation in trade, commerce, and security. The talks also highlighted the importance of the Canada–CARICOM Strategic Partnership, aimed at fostering deeper regional integration and shared economic opportunities.

Focus on Haiti

Both leaders expressed concern over the ongoing crisis in Haiti, underlining the urgent need for expanded international support to achieve long-term security and stability.

Carney noted Canada’s recent commitment of $60 million in funding, announced the day before at UNGA, to support Haiti and enhance maritime security in the region.

Ongoing partnership

Carney and Holness agreed to maintain close contact as Canada and CARICOM nations advance their shared priorities in security, stability, and prosperity.
