Toronto — Prime Minister Mark Carney marked Holodomor Memorial Day with a solemn statement honouring the millions of Ukrainians who were deliberately starved and persecuted under Stalin’s Soviet regime in 1932–33. The Prime Minister emphasized that the Holodomor was a genocide intended to eradicate the Ukrainian nation, and reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to supporting Ukraine amid Russia’s ongoing war of aggression.
In his remarks, Prime Minister Carney highlighted Ukraine’s long history of resilience in the face of attempts to undermine its sovereignty. He drew direct attention to the parallels between the atrocities of the Holodomor and the current threats facing Ukraine, stating that Russia continues to target Ukrainian communities, infrastructure, and agricultural lands.
“Your cause is our cause. We stand with you – now and always,” Carney said, directing his message to Ukrainians in Canada, in Ukraine, and globally.

The Prime Minister stressed the global responsibility to preserve the historical truth of the Holodomor and ensure that its victims are never forgotten. He concluded by honouring those lost and expressing solidarity with Ukrainian communities across Canada.
“Slava Ukraini,” he said in closing.
