Carney holds bilateral talks with Brazil’s Lula and South Africa’s Ramaphosa
As Canada prepares to host the 2025 G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis, Prime Minister Mark Carney is laying the groundwork for stronger global partnerships. On Wednesday, Carney held separate bilateral calls with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, advancing key areas of cooperation in energy, trade, and climate.
🤝 Canada–Brazil: Economic Growth and Environmental Vision
In his call with President Lula, Prime Minister Carney emphasized Canada’s commitment to deepening trade ties with Brazil, one of Latin America’s largest economies. Both leaders agreed to accelerate joint efforts in energy security and critical minerals, a shared priority as Canada leads the G7 and Brazil prepares to host the COP30 climate summit later this year.
The leaders also reaffirmed shared values, including Indigenous partnerships and environmental stewardship, marking a growing alignment between the Western Hemisphere’s two largest democracies. Carney extended an invitation to Lula to attend the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, where both leaders are expected to continue these discussions in person.
🌐 Canada–South Africa: A Shared G7–G20 Agenda
Carney’s conversation with President Ramaphosa similarly focused on climate, technology, and resource cooperation, including artificial intelligence and wildfire management.
The Prime Minister thanked South Africa for its assistance in recent Canadian wildfire seasons, acknowledging the country’s deployment of firefighters during times of need. With Canada chairing the G7 and South Africa holding the G20 presidency in 2025, both nations committed to coordinating global priorities and deepening bilateral ties.
Carney and Ramaphosa also confirmed they will meet next week at the G7 Summit, setting the stage for broader engagement between Africa’s leading democracy and Canada.
🌎 Canada’s Global Agenda: Trade, Climate, and Cooperation
Prime Minister Carney has made clear that Canada’s 2025 G7 presidency is about “delivering results through global cooperation.” The recent calls reflect an emphasis on building meaningful relationships with Global South leaders and aligning around critical mineral strategy, climate action, and inclusive economic growth.
The G7 Summit in Kananaskis, scheduled for June 15–17, will bring together the world’s leading democracies at a time of increasing geopolitical and environmental urgency.
