OTTAWA – Prime Minister Mark Carney continued to advance Canada’s diplomatic outreach on Tuesday with back-to-back calls to two of the world’s most influential leaders: French President Emmanuel Macron and U.S. President Donald J. Trump.
According to official readouts from the Prime Minister’s Office, both calls served as congratulatory gestures following Carney’s recent election victory, while also laying the groundwork for strengthened bilateral relations.
In his conversation with President Macron, Carney reaffirmed the momentum built during their in-person meeting in Paris last month. The two leaders committed to further deepening Canada-France defence and commercial ties, with both sides pledging to remain in close contact. The renewed alignment follows broader discussions within NATO around European security and economic resilience.
Later, Carney spoke with President Trump, who offered his congratulations and emphasized the importance of cooperation between Canada and the United States “as independent, sovereign nations.” The leaders reportedly agreed to meet in person in the near future. The conversation comes as Canada navigates a changing North American trade landscape, with new U.S. tariffs looming and cross-border economic tensions rising.
Today’s diplomatic outreach signals Carney’s intent to bolster Canada’s global partnerships early in his mandate, with particular emphasis on defence cooperation, trade stability, and regional security. His office has not yet released the dates or locations for the upcoming meetings.
