OTTAWA — As National Public Service Week begins, Prime Minister Mark Carney has issued a public statement commending the role of federal public servants in helping to drive the government’s ambitious agenda for change.
In his remarks, Carney acknowledged the scale and speed of transformation required by Canada’s new government, and credited the country’s public service as a vital engine behind the effort.
“Canada’s new government has a mandate to bring about big changes quickly. That depends on the public servants who go to work every day with a drive to make our country better for Canadians,” said Carney.
“To all federal public servants: thank you for your dedication and professionalism.”
Carney emphasized the government’s focus on building “the strongest economy in the G7,” and made clear that public servants will be central to delivering this vision.
A National Workforce in Transition
The statement comes just days after Carney announced Michael Sabia would be appointed the new Clerk of the Privy Council—Canada’s top civil servant—effective July 7. Sabia’s mandate includes leading the public service through a period of rapid implementation, reform, and increased accountability.
In his statement, Carney underlined the government’s belief that a “stronger Canada depends on a strong and effective public service”, referring to federal employees as the people who take policy and “transform [it] into tangible, impactful change.”
National Public Service Week (June 15–21) celebrates the contributions of over 300,000 federal employees across the country—from policy analysts and economists to border agents, inspectors, and frontline service staff.
Building Bold, Building Now
Carney’s closing remarks echoed a mantra increasingly heard from the Prime Minister’s Office: “build big, build bold, and build now.” This language aligns with the government’s broader push to deliver nation-building infrastructure, economic competitiveness, and public sector modernization.
With the 2025 G7 Summit set to begin in Kananaskis next week, and international attention turning to Canada’s leadership on climate, trade, and innovation, Carney’s tribute reinforces the vital role of the civil service behind the scenes.
