Passover Canada message highlights resilience and community safety

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a statement marking the beginning of Passover, recognizing the significance of the Jewish holiday while addressing ongoing concerns about rising antisemitism in Canada and globally.

Passover, which begins at sundown, commemorates the exodus of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt and is widely observed as a celebration of faith, perseverance, and freedom.

A message of resilience and tradition

In his statement, Carney highlighted the enduring meaning of Passover, describing it as a story rooted in resilience and the strength of a people overcoming hardship.

The Prime Minister noted that Jewish communities across Canada and around the world will gather over the eight-day observance to reflect on their shared history and cultural identity.

Addressing rising antisemitism

Carney’s message also focused on the resurgence of antisemitism, including threats and attacks targeting synagogues, schools, and community centres.

The federal government has introduced the Combatting Hate Act, which would make it a criminal offence to intentionally obstruct access to places of worship and community institutions.

The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of ensuring Jewish Canadians can live safely and freely across the country.

Commitment to safety and inclusion

The statement underscored the government’s broader commitment to protecting communities and promoting inclusion during a period described as increasingly uncertain globally.

Carney said the lessons of Passover continue to resonate, particularly in the context of modern challenges, reinforcing values of unity, resilience, and shared responsibility.

The Prime Minister concluded his message with a traditional greeting:

“Chag Pesach Sameach. Happy Passover.”
